Stones Throw Sweats - Winter 2012

I know it's summer down here in NZ, but there are one or two international readers right?
Check the lovely new sweats range for 2012 from my favourite record label Stones Throw.

Girls and boys cuts in grey/black speckle and classic grey marl crew necks and hoodies.
With the exchange rate looking real nice for us here, look into the future and see that you need one of these babies for your Winter wardrobe.

Madlib x Black Star x Blu

Madlib. Man or BEAST?

Black Star have just released their reunion single 'Fix Up' on the world.
It is the pre-cursor to what is being touted as the lead-single of their upcoming sophomore release.
Talk about 'the difficult second album'; their sublime debut LP 'Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are...' was released in 2002!

Turns out that Blu also had dibs on that same beat w/ a track titled 'EZ'.
Oh well, all great MC's.
Double ups are mean as boltz!

Sam Champ - Remix EP Instro's

Sam Champs dope Remix EP from late 2010 had some of THE best remixes goin' round for this past year.

Understandably it was an underground/internet with track from it doing some serious play time on more discerning radio stations around the planet.

The king remix off it was probably his rework of D'Angelo's 'Left & Right'...

Well, now you can cop the remix instrumentals for some serious blend action.

Also, keep a look out for Sam Champ's upcoming project with Buscrate's 16-Bit Ensemble.

Big up Rahdu and Sam Champ!

It's the D, Baby! Well, Maybe

Holy mother-of-soul!!!
D'Angelo dates have been announced for Europe in early T-12, and it all looks pretty legit according to Okayplayer.

Mr. We Miss You needs to actually hit the stage (and his notes for that matter) for the long awaited dream to come true, but we can live in hope can't we.

It was pretty hard deciding on which pic of the man to use for this post as most are either buff-D from a decade ago or ruff-D looking all bloated and unhealthy in his mug-shots.

So as you can see I plumped for the above classic from the sleeve of his absolute classic 'Voodoo' LP.
In the meantime, let's cross fingers, hope the man is doin' okay and have a listen to an all-time jam.

Freddie Gibbs x Madlib ( I call it Mad-Gib) - 'Thuggin'' EP

Sometimes I try and make mixtapes in a Madlib style but it just doesn't work.
Even if I set out to do a totally loose mix, my inner semi-perfectionist (I'm not completely pshyco) can't resist cleaning it up just a little.

So, I really admire the way that 'Lib just keeps putting out music with a hit & miss attitude.
He is so prolific that he seems to just put it out there which you could say is reflected in the way he treats his DJ sets.

You could argue that he might not be as focused as he was in the early to mid 00's when he put out his best works, but i'm really not that fussed. Although we're all hangin' for Madvilllainy 2!

Anyhow, here's his new shit with Freddie Gibbs...

Tony Andrews (Funktion One) x RBMA Interview

Hadn't heard of this guy, but I am really interested in what he has to say about the way that musical payback trends are inherently affecting the way listeners hear and consequently do or don't enjoy their listening experience of music.

Vinyl vs. digital and all that...

Base FM - Pete Rock Interview

Got an interview down with legendary hip-hop producer Pete Rock a couple weeks ago.
Had to get a bit of post-pro done before I hit it up on Mixcloud, but here it is now for a listen.

No insane revelations, but a focus on his production with tracks from his back catalogue as well as touching on the subject of his cousin Heavy D who coincidentally passed away yesterday at the WAY too young age of 44.

Rest in peace Heavy D.

Salva - 'Obsession' feat. B. Bravo

Total fave right now...

M.E.D. - 'Classic' LP

Stones Throw Records (pretty much) resident rapper M.E.D bka Medaphoar has just released his latest LP 'Classic'.

BBC Radio 1Xtra’s Stories: Gone Too Soon: J Dilla

BBC's Benji B has always been a champion of the late-great J-Dilla.

As part of the 'Gone Too Soon' series, Benji recently broadcast  a one-hour special on Jay Dee the G.O.A.T.
Comments from Common, Mos Def, Mase from De La Soul, Questlove...

As an essential musical history lesson or an update for fiending fans, must-have.

Hit it up HERE for the DL

DJ Bobby Brazuka - 'A Tribute to Chase, Paine & Bundy' Mix

Auckland City's Brazilian ambassador and all-round party guy Bob Brazuka has put together a new mix in his long line of musical episodes.

This one is titled 'A Tribute to Chase, Paine & Bundy'; a tribute mix to some of his favourite DJ's, DylanC, Manuel Bundy and ahhh, me.

Smooth grooves are definitely the modus here: DJ Mitsu the Beats, Sade, Roy Ayers cover versions, Dilla and all that!

Have a listen for yourself.

Lisa Preston x Sir Froderick - 'LoVeMuscLe' EP

Here is some seriously digable shit!

LoVeMuscLe is a collaboration between NZ's own Lisa Preston on the mic and beat-maker Sir Froderick from the U.S.
How they got there musical collab on I am not sure, but in the digi-age, anything is possible right?!

Lovely downbeat vibes with sound-scape washes and crunchy drums topped off by Preston's lilting vocals is the order of the day.

I am particularly digging the bossa swing of 'The Time Keeper' and the hip-hop bump n' cut of 'Magic Carpet Ride'.

Julien Dyne - 'Get Closer' feat. She's So Rad (Christoph El' Truento Remix)

The homie Truent works over (in a gentle way) the homie Julien Dyne's latest track 'Get Closer'.

Ba-boom-sha!

Jonti x Hodgy Beats - 'Nagoya'

Gotta say I am absolutely not a fan of 99% of the OFWGKTA Crew's output.

But, I am a fan of Australian-born Stones Throw Records artist Jonti and his recent LP release 'Twirligig'.

Found this track this morning though, Jonti & Hodgy Beats of the aforementioned crew doing their callabo thang on a tune called 'Nagoya'.

Definitely liking!

Monday Five - 19th September 2011

I have used this '5' before, but I do like it.

Tunes that hit me right now.
Tap the links for some DL/listening action.

One. The Blackbyrds - 'Dreaming of You'
Two. Amerigo Gazaway of Gummy Soul - 'Breakadawn' (De La Soul x Fela Kuti)
Three. The Primeridian & Tall Black Guy - 'Whistle While You Work'
Four. Christoph El' Truento - 'M o o n j u m p i n g'
Five. Linton Kwesi Johnson - 'Loraine' (Kompleks Edit)

LIPS - 'Everything To Me'

New-ish tune from LIPS whom I know little about.

I do however know some of the names involved; I recently posted about Jeremy Toy's rad She's So Rad project, and he pops up here on the drums(?!)

This is a very sweet, lilting, slightly melancholic pop number. Crash Bandycamp strikes again!

I do dig.

Turnaround DJ's - 'The Cloud'

With the Rugby World Cup facilitates most of the partying going on in New Zealand right now, all the party people need some dope tunes to keep their feet moving.

'The Cloud' at Auckland's waterfront is the "brainchild" of NZ's dorky Prime Minister but it seems to have made an impression, and whoever is programming the entertainment has their finger on the pulse by enlisting the DJ talents of legendary local DJ crew, The Turnaround.

The boys got high in the puffy shaped building on Friday night; check out a recording of their jam right here...

Christoph El' Truento - 'M o o n j u m p i n g'

Super-fresh new ish from Auckland beat maestro and producer for local crew @Peace.

Bandcamp DL's rule the world like Tears For Fears!

She's So Rad - 'In Circles'

She's So Rad is the band project of Jeremy Toy b.k.a Ota from the now defunct Opensouls.

Where Opensouls were firmly based in hip-hop and contemporary soul vibes, She's So Rad is a total departure with clear influences coming from the legendary "Dunedin sound".

...and definite links to British bands of the late 80's and early 90's. Think Ride, The Charlatans...

The man himself even narrows the LP's genre down to 'shoegaze'.
A one-word summary that doesn't quite sum it up.

Digging a bit further into his musical history though and the fact that Mr. Toy played guitar in semi-successful Auckland punk band Sommerset puts the sound of this record a little more into perspective.

There are also parallels in sound with modern artists such as Toro Y Moi, Washed Out, and Jonti.
See personal fave at the mo, 'Restless'...

For me, what I hear in it the most are early Cure and without question NZ's own John-Paul Satre Experience.

However, all of these other band names just serve as a reference point in describing what is going on here; this is a fresh, different, fantastic and rewarding album.

I am REALLY digging this and I wouldn't be suprised at all if it finds a fan in Sofia Coppola, it is right up her soundtrack ally.

Just think: "Sofia Coppola's new feature film 'Shoegaze' starring Marion Cottilard, Bill Murray, McCauley Culkin and Adrien Brody, featuring the music of She's So Rad."

Could happen!

MED - 'Classic' LP

MED is like Stones Throw Records' resident rapper.
The diversity that is the STR label's stable means that it is now far removed from the strictly 'hip-hop' label that it was in it's early days.

One thing about MED is that he almost always picks great beats, and on his latest to-be-released LP his selection is no exception; Alchemist, Karriem Riggins, Oh No and a whole swag of beats from 'in-house' producer, the legendary Madlib the Beatkonducta.

Set for release on November 1st (I have already entered it into my diary), hopes are high for a banger of a record.
If early release 12" 'Classic' b/w 'Where I'm From' and the vid for 'MEDical Card' are anything to go by, we should expect one of 2011's stronger rap records.

@Peace - @Peace

@Peace is a local crew consisting headlined on the mic by Tom Scott from Homebrew with rhyme partner Lui Tuiasu.

A coming together of some great local talent including Christoph el' Truento on executive production, graf/artist crew Cut Collective on the spacious astrology cover art as well as Electric Wire Hustle's live engineer/fourth band member, Benny Tones doing the mastering.

If Homebrew's fantastic work sounds washed in beer and pills, then this is definately swathed in LSD and pot with Tom and Lui going for a more introspective feel on this one.

Beat production comes from Soul Chef, Influence, Miso Shiru/Brandon Haru, El' Truento, and Nothing To Nobody.

You can head to the indomitable Bandcamp, name your price and cop a DOWNLOAD of this very nice little project.

Have a listen to some of my picks below...
