Sam Champ is the New York native who bought us THE best remix EP's of 2010/2011, the aptly titled 'Sam Champ Remixes' which featured his dope and oft-played remix of D'Angelo's 'Left & Right'...



Sam Champ: "You may have noticed me using the header Mixtape Mondays on a few posts recently–something we intend to make a semi-regular feature here at Okayplayer. We figured we would kick it off properly with an actual OKP mixtape; something official, something original, something exclusive. Something worthy to place alongside DJ Soul‘s incredible Best of Common and Dilla mixtapes. And then we was like, Hmm what’s happening the last monday in January that we could use as a theme? Superbowl? Newt Gingrich? Or MAYBE the phoenix-like reemergence of our beloved D’Angelo, who is currently spreading his fiery musical wings across the waters in Europe."

Sam Champ - Remix EP Instro's

Sam Champs dope Remix EP from late 2010 had some of THE best remixes goin' round for this past year.

Understandably it was an underground/internet with track from it doing some serious play time on more discerning radio stations around the planet.

The king remix off it was probably his rework of D'Angelo's 'Left & Right'...

Well, now you can cop the remix instrumentals for some serious blend action.

D'Angelo dates have been announced for Europe in early T-12, and it all looks pretty legit according to Okayplayer.

Mr. We Miss You needs to actually hit the stage (and his notes for that matter) for the long awaited dream to come true, but we can live in hope can't we.

It was pretty hard deciding on which pic of the man to use for this post as most are either buff-D from a decade ago or ruff-D looking all bloated and unhealthy in his mug-shots.

So as you can see I plumped for the above classic from the sleeve of his absolute classic 'Voodoo' LP.
In the meantime, let's cross fingers, hope the man is doin' okay and have a listen to an all-time jam.

LP FEATURE: Eddie Kendricks - 'People...Hold On' + The Others...

EDDIE KENDRICKS - 'PEOPLE...HOLD ON'

Yeeeahhh. I have been gettin' back into and re-lovin' this old favourite of mine lately. As a result I have been tuning out for any version of 'Girl, You Need A Change of Mind'  I can come across.

Released on legendary label Motown/Tamla, it has to be one of the best 70's soul/funk records you could ever hear, and was released only three years after he left the legendary Temptations.

Here, on his 2nd solo LP, he showcases his amazing falsetto and musically, you could say that some of the jams here are direct pre-cursors to the disco movement.

Comes highly recommended, this is THE Eddie Kendricks LP to find on wax if you are so inclined.

MUST HAVE.

Ironically for a singer, he lost a battle with lung-cancer at the too-young age of 52 in 1992. Have a look at this interview recorded just a year before he passed.

While on the subject...

At the weekend I finally got my self a copy (and so completed my vinyl series collection) of 'Strange Games & Things' Volume 1. Eddie's 'Girl, You Need A Change of Mind' is fittingly the last track on the set.

Great compilation!

Ill versions have been done by Paul Lewis, IG Culture on 'Zen Badizm', and D'Angelo on his 'Interpretations/Remakes' LP over the years, but for me Eddie's is the stand-out.

Beat-head trainspotters might also recognise that 'My People...Hold On' has been sampled amongst others.
