Monday (Tuesday) Five - 28th March, 2011

A good ol' fashioned rustic number 5 appears on this weeks list.
Let's take it back then with some classic faves of mine over the years...

One. Heatwave - 'Star of the Story' (From their smooth-as 1977 LP 'Central Heating'. Tip: ATCQ sample).

Two. Happy Mondays - 'Loose Fit' (From their only KILLER album 'Pills, Thrills & Bellyaches).

Three. The Roots feat Common - 'Act Too (Love of My Life)' ("The an-tici-pation arose as time froze...").

Four. Roy Ayers - 'Searchin'' (Good vibrations!)

Five. The Smiths - 'Half A Person' (Jangly Marr guitar and Morrissey rhymes at their best).

Knxwledge X 'Mango' EP

Head to Knxwledge's Bandcamp for the DL of this fleeting EP.

There are four tracks, three of which just breeze by with not too much of a shake-up for the world of music.

It's track three however that is the absolute stand-out...
'KeepÂșn' is a BOMB remix of Busta Rhymes' 'Ill Vibe' featuring Q-Tip.

Knxwledge laces the classic acapella with loping drunk-drums, bass pops, plucks and slaps, smooth Rhodes keys and a dirty analogue sound that has a great beat-tape kinda feel.

Shouts to Christoph' El Truento for the heads up!

Listen on repeat for 90's hip-hop warm fuzzies please.

Thanks.

Thom Yorke the DJ x Low End Theory L.A.

So Thom Yorke of Radiohead does DJ sets now eh?!

Hell, I'd pay to see that! Radiohead are a fine, fine, fine band and Thom is the heart.

He has always made it clear his love of hip-hop and electronic music, so I was keen to check out this vid of him dropping bombs at L.A.'s Low end Theory night.

Check Fly Lo and Gaslamp Killer going bananas as Thom drops some Burial and Madvillain.

His DJ formula: No need for mixes, just play heaters, be a musical legend and watch people's faces melt.

Simple...

Thom Yorke Live DJ Set @ Low End Theory LA 3.9.11 from Theo Jemison on Vimeo.

While I'm here I may as well post a Radiohead stormer.

Here is a shining example of how to put the letters E.P.I.C into three and half minutes (a very hard thing to do).

The word "Incredible" was invented for this song.

Sample & Flip #8

"Sample & Flip" has been a minute, but he's back with a sweet one.

There is a Dilla thread through this one, the early clue is Detroit x L.A. x France.

One of my favourite beats from the late producer's legendary beat-catalogue is his 'Show Me What You Got' instrumental that got picked up by Busta Rhymes for his 'Anarchy' LP...

Just sooo killah! It wasn't really that necessary to bless the track with Busta's flow; it's more like the other way round. However, he does an admirable job...

Stacey Epps has some cool jams; not a formidable back catalogue, but there are some fine moments.

One of my picks is her floaty trip 'Eye' from the 5-star 'Madvillainy' LP with L.A. City compadre Madlib the Beatkonducta...

Great video too.
Anyhow, I have digressed slightly from the true path.

Ms. Epps has a jam with Madlib entitled 'Skin'. Brief and brilliant AND produced by Dilla (that 'Show Me...' beat again!)

Madlib does a switch up in his own style on the all-time lyrics from Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five's legendary 'The Message'

One of my faves at the mo'...

Here's the latest incarnation of the sample.
Robert Glasper is a jazz musician form the U.S. who is a noted Dilla fiend, even recording entire suites of the producer's music.

From late in 2010, here is 'Dilla Shine' featuring Zynzelay...

Lets tie the laces on this one.

Stereolab do some damn fine music, and the sample that you can hear interpolating it's magical textures through these Dilla joints is their jam 'Come Play In the Milky Night'.

Psychedelic, beautiful and unique, I never get sick of this source material jam...

Like Run DMC; there it is.

Oh, and bonus 'Lib tune, 'Infinity'...

"Sample & Flip" says "PEACE".

Oddissee x Toine - 'Different Now'

Fresh from Mello Music Group we have a joint from the prolific Oddissee and MC Toine of up-and-coming group DTMD.

Check out 'Different Now' at Bandcamp for the free DL.

The Helpless Dreamer LP was released late last year.
